Hyundai is recalling 169,932 electric models in South Korea

Error in battery system, at ICCU level (Integrated Charge Control Unit = Charge Control Unit), requires Hyundai recalling 169,932 electric models. Those based on the E-GMP platform. This is the biggest recall of cars based on this platform since its launch in 2021.

This failure can also cause a loss of engine power. Owners of affected vehicles say they heard ” loud noise, followed by a warning message on their dashboard “. Some have seen a decrease in the amount of power but others claim to lose everything.

This includes the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Hyundai Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, GV70 and G80 EV, as well as the Kia EV6. A big blow to the South Korean group, which works better and better outside its borders, and which announced a few days ago to remodel its Ioniq 5.

Will all models in the world be affected?

The recovery operation currently only takes place in the South Korean market. But there is a good chance that the campaign will go global in the future. Several complaints have already been filed in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the issue in June 2023. The first reports confirm defects at the ICCU level. The South Korean group could therefore be forced to recall up to 500,000 additional vehicles worldwide.

Hyundai may have been aware of the problem for some time. In South Korea, the manufacturer has been offering its customers free maintenance since last year. But a big reminder was inevitable.

To fix this defect, Hyundai plans to install a software update on all affected vehicles. If this is not enough, the ICCU will simply be replaced.
