More and more Chinese producers are striving for Germany. Chery has been running a design and development center in Raunheim near Frankfurt for several years. Now the plans of the Chinese to enter the market seem to be more stable.

Another Chinese car maker, Chery, is preparing to launch in Germany. Three of its brands are ready to come to market in this country, starting at the end of 2024 with the crossover provider Omoda. An SUV and a premium brand will follow later.

Chery’s first model for Germany will be the Omoda 5, a compact crossover 4.40 meters long in the volume segment, which is positioned directly against the Hyundai Kona and Toyota C-HR. Initially there will be a four-cylinder turbo petrol engine for the car, and an electric model will be added later. Chery’s export boss Charlie Zhan did not specify the price when asked, but just under 30,000 euros for the combustion engine model and around 50,000 for the electric car seem realistic.

Omoda is a portmanteau word made up of “Oxygen” for oxygen and “Moda” for fashion. The target customer is younger than that of the “Chery” brand, the main Chinese brand of the group. Sister brand Jaecoo also targets the same buyers, offering more robust off-road models on the same platform as Omoda. Zhan cites the Land Rover family of vehicles as design references. Together, the two new Chery brands are expected to add eight different models to their range in the medium term.

Plans for the first electric brand Exlantix, which is scheduled to launch in late 2024, have similar ambitions. Up to seven different models are planned. The luxury carrier wants to score points for, among other things, interactivity, connectivity and an 800-volt battery system with a short charging time. Cars from the three brands will initially be sold primarily through a common dealer network. Negotiations with potential sales partners are currently ongoing.
