A worker dies at the Subaru factory Car news

  • Subaru temporarily suspends production in Japan due to the death of an employee

The news is usually happy and light when it comes to the automotive industry, but sometimes the saddest things happen. This is the case of this worker who died inside the Subaru factory in Japan, specifically that of Yajima, in Gunma prefecture.

By sharing his story with you, we want to pay tribute to all the workers in the automotive industry who carry out the tasks that are not always dangerous to deliver the cars we love.

The incident happened on the evening of February 13, as reported by the website Habari Magari. The 25-ton mold fell on the worker in question, who was unlucky.

Immediately, Subaru temporarily halted production at three of its Japanese factories, including those that make the Forester and Crosstrek SUVs for export, as well as the BRZ coupe.

A police spokesman in Ota, the city where the Yajima plant is located, confirmed the details of the death. Authorities identified the employee as a 60-year-old man who had worked at Subaru for 35 years.

The man was operating a crane by himself using a remote control to lift and move 25-tonne molds, local newspaper Jomo Shimbun reported. One of the molds fall, trap to another mold. An autopsy determined that death was due to asphyxiation.

The Yajima plant is responsible for the production of the Impreza compact and Outback, Crosstrek and Forester SUVs. The main factory nearby makes the BRZ, Impreza and Crosstrek, as well as the sporty WRX and the Levorg, a station wagon that is sold in Japan.

An event that reminds us that although safety has been greatly enhanced over the years within the assembly plants, there is still work to be done. We will definitely find a bug that explains the crash, and that will probably lead to improvements.

It is at least desirable. Our thoughts are with the family members and loved ones of the victim.
