Toyota is offering a 60% discount on its hydrogen car in the US

Hydrogen is increasingly emerging as a bipolar member of the energy family. One week everything is close and the next week there is unlimited hydrogen for everyone. In any case, at this time, the hydrogen car is not a good fit in the United States. Shell is in the process of closing gas stations, and therefore it seems that Toyota would also like to get rid of the existing stocks.

In the US you can now buy a new hydrogen car with a discount of $ 40,000 if you arrange financing through Toyota, reports Cars Direct. At the end of the day you pay the converted amount 25,000 euros for a new Toyota Mirai. That’s cheaper than a new VW Polo here. In the Netherlands you now pay at least 70,195 euros for a Toyota hydrogen car.

You’ll likely have to be a US resident to qualify for the offer, but if you’re interested in Mirai, it could be a great opportunity. In the Netherlands you now pay less than 40,000 euros for a used copy of the new generation Mirai and a used car of the previous generation costs about 20,000 euros. Please consider possible repair costs.

In the Netherlands you currently pay about 20 euros per kilo of hydrogen at the gas station, so we are talking about 112 euros for a full tank, which you can drive around 650 km. So hydrogen is not very cheap to drive and from 2026 you will have to pay the price full road tax for almost 2,000 kg. This Toyota Mirai is not dirt cheap to own and drive.

Where can you fill up with hydrogen in the Netherlands?

You can find a few kilos of hydrogen, mainly in the areas around Rotterdam, Utrecht and Amsterdam, but you can also hit things in Hoogeveen and Groningen. If you live in Venlo or Harlingen, it is more difficult to have Mirai. On top of H2 site you can see a map where all hydrogen filling stations can be found in the Netherlands, but also in Germany and Belgium.
