The ‘model names’ Polestar gives its models do not indicate where the cars are in the brand hierarchy. Although the Polestar 3 launched last year is above the Polestar 2, the Polestar 4 which plays a central role in this article does not underestimate the Polestar 3. Not in the literal and figurative sense. The Polestar 4 is a size smaller than the 3 in every respect and is also positioned below that SUV in terms of price.

Polestar describes the 4 as a model with the aerodynamics of a coupe and the interior space of an SUV. With its smooth shape and quick slope of the roof, the Polestar 4 does not immediately look like an SUV, despite its 16.6 cm clearance and the fact that it is packed with the essentials of a crossover. Why? Mainly because of the longer frame and the surprisingly low nose. But how big is the Polestar 4 then, and how does it compare to the 2 and 3?

Dimensions and base

Where the Polestar 3, like the Volvo EX90, is based on the SPA2 platform developed by Volvo and the Polestar 2 uses the CMA platform developed by Volvo and Geely, the Polestar 4 is crowned on Geely’s common SEA platform. Variants of that platform family can be found under cars like Lotus Eletre, but also under Smart #1, Volvo EX30 will be launched this year, Smart #3 and Zeekr X. Polestar 4 has a length of 4.84 meters, a width of at least 2.14 meters and height of 1.54 meters. That makes it only 25 centimeters shorter, but also 6 centimeters higher than the Polestar 2. The Polestar 3 surpasses both models in length and height. What is special is that the wheelbase of the Polestar 4 is 3 meters after one millimeter, while the larger Polestar 3 has a small space of a centimeter between its front and rear axles.

Not surprisingly, you can store a lot in the back of the Polestar 4. The luggage compartment in the back swallows 500 liters. If you throw the back seat flat, you can store 1,536 liters. Front luggage compartment – the so-called drunk – it has an average capacity of 15 liters.

Design

Like the design of the Polestar 5, the 4 is clearly inspired by the 2020 Directive Concept. In fact, the Polestar 4 is very similar. The shape of the bumper and that of the two layers but the headlight units are closely spaced similar to those of the Code Concept. But there is more. Just look at the shape of the windows, the ‘hips’ and the rear. You’re right: the Polestar 4, just like the research model on which the base is solid, does not have a traditional rear window. In fact, it has no rear window at all.

Instead of the usual rear-view mirror, the Polestar 4 has a display in the familiar part, which shows the images taken by the rear camera mounted on the buttocks. What? Do you want to watch the passengers in the back seat from the driver’s seat? That is possible, because at the touch of a button the screen works like a traditional mirror.

The Polestar 4 has door handles, frameless side windows and its makers always include a large glass roof that can be optionally dimmed electronically. The fact that the Polestar 4 closely resembles the Code Concept also means that Polestar’s newcomer is closely related to the Polestar 5 that is planned for next year. The Polestar 5 will be a lower model, stretched even further than the 4 and will be one segment above the 4.

Interiors and gadgets

The Polestar 4’s workplace is similar to that of the 3, although the youngest Polestar has a more floating center tunnel and a horizontally oriented infotainment screen that has a diagonal of no less than 15.4 inches. Polestar sports a vertical screen on the 3. Android Automotive OS runs on the big screen. The system developed by Google is compatible with applications such as Google Maps, Google Play and Google Assistant. Don’t worry: the system can only handle Apple CarPlay. The second screen, but with a horizontal dimension of 10.2 inches, is smaller in the steering column and functions as a digital instrument panel. Polestar leads the 4th most with a head-up display that can bring a projection of more than 37 centimeters to the driver.

Rear passengers in the Polestar 4 have reclining backrests and can control the interior climate via a display between the front seats. Polestar uses materials recovered from PET bottles, among other things, in 4. Materials from recycled fishing nets are used in the floor mats.

Optionally, Polestar offers a Harman Kardon sound system with twelve speakers and a 1,400 Watt amplifier. For those who give their eardrums a better experience, two additional speakers can be added to each of the two front seats, bringing the total number of speakers up to sixteen.

Of course, Polestar fills the 4 with advanced and functional safety systems, so the new EV is equipped with enough cameras and sensors. Polestar 4 has a radar, twelve ultrasonic sensors and no less than twelve cameras, one of which monitors the driver. Polestar 4 emphasizes that it does not record, but only monitors the driver’s eye and head movements to detect possible fatigue.

With electricity up to 600 km

True to tradition, the Polestar 4 will be available with different powertrains and one or two electric motors. So with rear or four wheel drive. Right now Polestar is only focusing on the Long Range versions, but the fact that it’s naming those flavors suggests that there will also be Standard Range versions later. Polestar 4 is definitely not light. Depending on the version chosen, it weighs 2,232 to 2,351 kg.

The Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor has two electric motors that together produce 544 hp and 686 Nm. This more powerful version flies at a speed of 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds. Underneath is a large battery pack of 102 kWh (94 kWh usable) which gives this engine version a WLTP range of up to 564 km. Like the Motor Range Dual Motor, the Polestar 4 has a convertible chassis. The maximum speed of this strong version is 200 km / h.

The Polestar 4 Long Range Single Motor has a 272 hp and 343 Nm power electric motor that drives the rear wheels. This Long Range variant also has a 102 kWh battery and with its single electric motor, the Polestar 4 squeezes a range of up to 600 km. The Polestar Long Range Single Motor accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 180 km/h Depending on the version chosen, the Polestar 4 stands on 20 to 22-inch light steel.

An empty battery pack can be filled with new power and up to 200 kW. A heat pump is standard and Vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology makes it possible to charge other devices as well. Handy on vacation. Also useful during holidays: Polestar 4 Long Range Single Motor can tow up to 1,500 kg, Long Range Dual Motor even 2,000 kg.

Packages

We don’t yet have prices for the Polestar 4, although we already know what you can expect to pay later. For example, the 4 will be available with packages called Plus Pack and Plus Pro Pack, the second of which will bring an electrochromatic panoramic roof, body-colored wheel rims and more ambient lighting to the Polestar 4, among other things. If you go for the Nappa Pack, you get nappa leather upholstery and seats that offer massage function as well as ventilation function. The Pilot’s Package brings Pilot Support to the Polestar 4 and those who tick the Performance Package get 22-inch alloys, more powerful Brembo brakes, a tuned chassis and gold-colored trim on the brake calipers and seat belts.

The Netherlands

Polestar 4 will be launched for the first time in China, where it will be released for the first time in November this year. Polestar 4 should be launched in Europe in early 2024. Polestar offers an indicative price of €60,000 for the European market.
