This beautiful electric SUV from Europe seems to be lost – update: big price cut

More than two years ago it still looks sunny for Fisker Ocean. A beautiful electric SUV built in Europe with a good range was on the starting blocks. It was probably offered for sale and subsidy. But now the end seems near.

Things are not going well for Dane Henrik Fisker. He rose to fame as the designer of the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage, but was less successful as the founder and owner of Fisker Automotive. The Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid faltered and the company went bankrupt in 2013. Fisker then started several other companies, again without much success.

Fisker Sea with a range of 480 km

The tide seemed to be turning when Fisker Inc. came with the electric Sea. The Fisker Sea is a particularly clean-looking SUV with a range of 480 km. Initially, the Sea was planned only for the American market, but in 2022 Fisker decided to cross over to Europe beyond EV. The experienced Magna Steyr in Austria took over production there. So far without the desired results.

Big discount Fisker Ocean

In an effort to increase US sales, Fisker has reduced US prices. The price of the basic Sport model with 286 hp and 80 kWh battery will decrease by $ 14,000 from $ 39,000 to $ 25,000. That is more than 23,000 euros. That’s cheaper than a Dacia Spring with 65 hp…

The price cut for the top-end Extreme version makes perfect sense. It goes from $61,500 to $37,500, or a price drop of $24,000. This means that the 573 hp Fisker Sea with its 113 kWh battery costs only 34,875 euros.

That sounds like a bargain, the question is whether you want a car from a brand that can crash. It remains to be seen if we can also expect such big price cuts in Europe.

Financial injection

Although Fisker claimed that the fourth quarter of 2023 showed strong demand growth, an external financial injection was much needed. He indicated that he was in discussions about this with a ‘major car manufacturer’. Which manufacturer was never officially confirmed, but most indications are that it was Nissan. Earlier this month, it was reported that Fisker had hired outside consultants to discuss options for the troubled company, including possible bankruptcy. That caused the dividend to drop by more than 50 percent.

Production has been discontinued

While Fisker insisted that it was still in talks with a “major automaker,” the stock recovered. However, a bad sign was that the company soon failed to meet interest payments and stopped production of electric cars. In addition, Fisker tried to sell some of its inventory worth about 490 million euros.

Fisker has now indicated that discussions with a ‘major car manufacturer’ about a possible investment have come to nothing. Shares fell 30 percent. Trading was halted and the New York Stock Exchange announced that Fisker’s shares were being liquidated, according to electrec.co.

‘Fisker Ocean program nog niet af’

Yet another Fisker fiasco isn’t just a matter of bad luck. We tried to arrange the Fisker Ocean for driving feeling with the European organization, but communication was very difficult. Running shows from other media, including the famous American technology reviewer MKBHD and carwow it didn’t produce too good a picture. The prevailing opinion is that the Fisker Sea program in particular is still incomplete.
