Electric Fiat 500e will soon be cheaper thanks to a new amazing battery

Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Jeep, etc.) has just made a major announcement for the electric Fiat 500e. It will soon have a new battery, which will allow the price of this already very attractive electric car to be reduced.

Stellantis has just announced a major plan for its historic Italian factory in Mirafiori. 240 million Euros will be invested in developing eDCT gearboxes for diesel vehicles. But at the time of this announcement, the car group also announced a 100 million euro investment to improve the electric Fiat 500e.

The company is not saying more, but it is a safe bet that Fiat will combine the new battery with LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) chemistry, without cobalt. Chemistry that makes it possible to reduce battery costs, and therefore the price of an electric car. Stellantis notes that this will improve ” customer experience and an attractive price/freedom ratio«.

What is the freedom for this future Fiat 500e?

Unfortunately, nothing is known about this new battery, and it is not known if the capacity will be the same as the two existing battery packs. As a reminder, the electric Fiat 500e is currently available with a battery capacity of 42 kWh (331 km of WLTP range) or 24 kWh (190 km of theoretical range).

In theory, LFP batteries have a lower energy density than cobalt-based NMC or NCA packs. But it is possible that Stellantis has been able to maintain the same energy density, thanks to the technological development that has taken place since 2020, the date of sale of the electric Fiat 500e. Which would make it possible to produce these two batteries in LFP chemistry, to reduce the prices of these two versions.

Currently, these two versions start from 30,400 and 33,900 euros respectively. But competition is growing in the segment, particularly with the arrival of the Citroën ë-C3 and Renault 5 E-Tech as well as the facelifted Peugeot e-208.

The arrival of the hot Fiat 500?

Another possibility that will be offered by this improved platform is the possible arrival of the hot Fiat 500, based on the same platform. Stellantis hasn’t said it outright, but that’s at least what the rumors have been doing lately. This would make it possible to increase the production rate at its Mirafiori plant, which is not operating at full capacity, due to the very low demand for the Fiat 500e electric car.

We will have to wait a little while before we know all the details of this platform, as well as the price and autonomy of this modified version of the electric Fiat 500e.
