Alfa Romeo Milano electric: a new variant on a well-known theme

Alfa Romeo now also has a fully electric model: the Milano. This compact SUV comes in two power variants, but in fact the technical basis of the car has been known for a long time. The Milano is based on the proven electric platform that all other Stellantis brands use for (almost) all of their compact EVs.

Alfa Romeo has a long and glorious history. With a sense of nostalgia, lovers and connoisseurs prefer to see something of that history in the new models of the Italian brand. In that case, the new Milano must be a small disappointment for this group of buyers, because the modern design of the compact SUV has a few elements that directly refer to the classic models of Alfa Romeo.

But Milano does not deny its origins. When Dutchman Bob Romkes took over as Alfa Romeo’s chief designer, he set himself the goal of creating a refreshing new family look for the iconic Italian brand. With the emphasis of the moment, but with the respect of the past. If you look closely, it becomes clear that the Milano certainly displays details that are distinctly Alfa Romeo.

Perhaps this is more the case internally than externally. Everything in the Milano is now also digital, but the classic two-tube shape of the instrument still has its origins in the analog era. Just like the Alfa Romeo lover wants. Also impressive is the high center console with integrated central display for running all systems and multimedia.

The Milano will be available in three different versions: Techno, Premium and Sport. These signs clearly indicate what can be expected from the standard equipment: the emphasis is on technology, luxury or sports. If you choose Sport, the Milano has bucket seats from racing and rally specialist Sabelt.

When you consider that Bob Romkes and his team had to work within well-defined technical frameworks, the Milano deserves more appreciation. The basis of the SUV is a platform that is also used by members of the group such as Peugeot 2008, Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600. Cars with a very different appearance than the elegant-sporty Milano.

However, the specifications of the electric car have not changed: the battery has a capacity of 54 kWh, the electric motor produces 156 hp. Charging is possible with a maximum power of 100 kW. Just like with electric Peugeot, Jeep and Fiat.

However, Alfa Romeo immediately launched a more powerful version. Like the Veloce, the Milano has 240 hp. A small slip differential keeps all the power in control. Unlike the standard version, which has a range of 410 km according to the WLTP test method, the Milano Veloce clearly focuses on driving pleasure and sports performance, so you will have to go to the charging station a little earlier. A live operating system was also developed specifically for Veloce.

When Alfa Romeo Milano will be available and its price has not yet been announced. We look forward to welcoming the car on Dutch roads after the summer. First and foremost as a special introductory edition, Limited Edition Professional. In addition to the fully electric Milano, a hybrid version will also be available.
