LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — For just about a week, drivers from around the world will rev up their engines and hit the streets of Downtown Long Beach. The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach has been an exciting event full of speed and excitement since 1975.

“When you come here as a driver, it’s amazing. The walls are so close, that there’s no margin for error. Even though it’s tough and unforgiving, it’s very rewarding,” Ricky Taylor, professional driver of Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti. .

Organizers said the event attracts more than 190,000 fans a year and fans can expect a great line-up of drivers and three days of festivities.

“What they get here is a lot of racing. We have six races here on the weekend. There are also a number of activities going on. We have live shows, we have concerts, we have a huge village of food trucks. exotic cars,” Jim Michaelian, President and Long Beach Grand Prix Association CEO said.

For drivers, it is an exciting experience that requires skill and concentration.

“I mean it’s crazy, it’s one of the most popular races. The IndyCar series has the Indianapolis 500 and it’s more obvious. But for that, I’d say Long Beach is number two. So, it’s always very popular,” Roberto Guerrero said. , a retired professional race car driver.

“So preparing for this race, if it’s only one hour and 40 minutes versus 24 hours, it’s obviously a very different thing. So, there’s no time to work on speed, to get comfortable. The second time you hit the track it has to be perfect. 10 out of 10 power,” Taylor said.

“It’s a very family atmosphere for people to come and we hope people come out and enjoy three days of fun and excitement,” Michaelian said.
