GMC Limits Consumers’ Dreams With New Baseline Hummer EV Plans

New GMC Hummer EV the trim scheduled to arrive for the 2025 model year appears to have been scrapped. This new expansion would serve as a new base model with a smaller battery and shorter equipment list than the 2X. The GMC Hummer EV 2 is a new model that would bring a more affordable place for those willing to drive this electric vehicle.

What does this mean for Hummer EV customers?

If the new EV 2 were part of the mix, the Hummer EV’s starting price would be $79,995. This may sound like a cheap price to many, but the 2X model starts at $98,845. This is almost $20,000 more than the target price of the new EV 2.

The buzz and appeal of the Hummer EV’s higher-end trim put ads for the lower-priced model on the back burner for a few years. The GMC Hummer EV 2 was first announced in 2021 but never went into production. It was supposed to go on sale this spring to be the cheapest version of this high-priced EV, but GM’s plans have changed.

Was this new base reduction the answer to slowing EV sales?

Although most EVs experience slower sales than in 2023, GMC Hummer EV models continue to show strong results. Given the $100,000-plus price tag for the SUV and truck versions of this EV, GMC didn’t expect high sales figures. Still, sales during Q4 2023 were 2,028 and continued to be strong in the first quarter of 2024. Those sales figures for the last quarter have decreased to 825 Hummer EV Pickup trucks and 1,203 Hummer EV SUV versions.

What? Could there be a GMC Hummer EV 2?

GMC originally planned to release a new Hummer EV 2 and 2X for the 2024 model year. Both use the same equipment and offer 625 horsepower and a driving range of 250 miles. The Hummer EV 2 would have a 400-volt fast charging capability. This makes it easy to bring the battery up to 80% quickly.

Those waiting for the new, low-cost Hummer EV 2 to hit the market are in for a treat. This new base model is not headed to the market, leaving the 2X as the base model. Unfortunately, the 2X carries a starting price that’s 25% higher than the EV 2 would have been, bummer.
