Electromobility: Mazda partners with Panasonic – electromobility (e-mobility), corporate, economic and industry news (other) | News | VISION Mobility

Mazda currently seems hesitant about electric mobility, but they also plan to increase electric mobility in Hiroshima. Why we’re now “collaborating” with Panasonic: The two companies began discussions about establishing a medium- to long-term partnership to supply high-energy storage for vehicles in June 2023.

Background: The MX-30 is still based on prismatic cells, as seen in the picture, but in the future there are special plans to use “cylindrical lithium-ion car batteries”. Interesting to know: Panasonic also offers round cells in the 2170 format and now also the 4680 Tesla cells, among others. These large round cells are currently being built on a test array in Japan and series production is planned for the USA. Panasonic is establishing a new production facility in Kansas, where so far only 2170 cell production has been confirmed. Masahiro Moro, Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mazda said:

“As part of our electrification plans, Mazda is working with its partners in three phases to flexibly adapt to changing regulatory trends, consumer needs and other areas.”

With the agreement now signed, Mazda and Panasonic confirm their commitment to solving various social challenges. These include combating global warming, promoting sustainable growth in the automotive and battery industries, securing local jobs and supporting young talent. More details about the new partnership are expected to be announced soon.

What does that mean?

Although Mazda is currently best known for new six-cylinder engines and rotary engines, they plan to use electric motors in the future. And it has brought Panasonic, a recognized battery specialist from Japan, on board. It will be exciting, especially since Subaru has also signed a similar agreement with Panasonic. And the American market is very important for Subaru.
