The Illinois State Lottery Commission is alleging a former employee stole lottery tickets and fraudulently redeemed them for sizable winnings.
The Commission has filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County against Donna L. Lusson, a former employee at the Fairmount City Lottery Store, alleging that she used her position to pilfer tickets and redeem them for prizes between 2009 and 2011.
According to court documents, Lusson is accused of using her access to lottery tickets to steal winning tickets and cash them in for prizes ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. The Commission further claims that she was able to do this without being detected by manipulating the lottery system and falsifying paperwork.
The Illinois State Lottery Commission is seeking to recoup the stolen funds, as well as damages for fraud and breach of contract.
“This case is an example of an employee taking advantage of their position of trust to steal from the State,” said Illinois Lottery Director Michael Jones. “We take these types of situations very seriously and we are committed to ensuring that the integrity of our lottery system remains intact.”
The Commission has also initiated an internal investigation into the incident and has implemented additional security measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
