Alabama Barker, 17, recently showcased her father, Travis Barker’s, $330K Rolls-Royce in a new photograph, eliciting backlash for the family’s ostensible ostentatiousness.
The photograph in question showed Alabama in the driver’s seat of the luxury vehicle, with her father standing outside of it, looking at the camera. The image was captioned “No big deal,” and was met with a flurry of comments deriding the Barkers for what many perceived as a flaunting of their wealth.
However, the Barkers have not shied away from the criticism, asserting their right to enjoy their successes and wealth. In an interview with a tabloid, Travis Barker remarked that he was proud of his daughter and of their belongings, and that it was not his place to monitor what Alabama chooses to share with her followers.
“It’s our stuff and we can do whatever we want with it,” he said.
He went on to explain that he and his wife, Kourtney Kardashian, had worked hard for their wealth, and were not ashamed to show it off.
“We don’t have to apologize for having nice things, and we’re not going to,” he said.
The photograph, and the controversy it spawned, has sparked a larger debate over the role of wealth in society and the implications of flaunting it. The Barkers have asserted their right to celebrate their accomplishments, but the incident has left many questioning the appropriate way to display one’s success.
