Alfa Romeo: Bottas without Hamilton suddenly leader / Formula 1

In 2022 we will see the new Valtteri Bottas in Formula 1: The Finn shows his leadership qualities in the racing team. the announcement does not surprise his boss.

Valtteri Bottas is on a roll this season. For many years he was in the shadow of Lewis Hamilton, although he had a car worthy of the title at Mercedes, he could not overtake his dominant teammate.

Bottas didn’t like the fact that the Mercedes boss called Finn a “winger” at all, but he summed up his situation perfectly.

Bottas moved to Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season and is showing brand new qualities in the new role. He has already collected 40 points in seven races, which is not important to team boss Fred Vasseur.

Because the added value that Bottas brings to a traditional team is above all outside the car. “It’s a fact that he always thinks about the team and not himself. He always tries to bring the best out of the 500 people who work in the factory,” Vasseur said.

Vasseur continues: “Every time he steps into the simulator, he spends an extra two hours touring the factory, department by department. He tries to motivate the boys. That’s the invisible part of the job, but to me it’s mega. We are a smaller team than the others because we probably have 250 fewer people than teams like Alpine or Williams. We need the best of everyone. Valtteri, and his teammate Zhou, are doing a great job.”

Bottas is convinced that he must be part of this motivation, Vasseur said. “When he comes, he goes on stage and talks to everyone. It is very difficult to measure that in cycle times, but it is important. We have to be more responsive and efficient than other teams because we are small. For me, this is an added value of great importance .”

Because: «The most important thing for me is that the employees are sure that they are part of the result. If they think it’s not, then they lose some motivation,” Vasseur said.

The result of this motivation is shown in the song with good results. Which in turn ensures that Alfa Romeo appears more often on TV, “we attract new sponsors and we get more budget that helps us for development. This is the key to success. Bottas can convey that message to the people at the factory.”

He is not surprised by the “new” Bottas. Vasseur has known the Finns for 15 years and both have worked together before.

“I don’t want to compare with Mercedes because they have been world champions seven years in a row. But he was always overshadowed by Hamilton and I was sure that when he was the leader he would be a very different person,” said Vasseur. “And I think he went in that direction.”
