Alfa Romeo explain the ‘relatively clear advantages’ of the Red Bull sidepod concept : PlanetF1

Alfa Romeo has recently reaped the rewards of the Red Bull sidepod concept, which boasts a range of relatively clear advantages.

The Red Bull sidepod concept, which was initially developed in 2016, is a design feature that sees the sidepods of the car positioned much further forward. This allows for a more aerodynamically efficient car, with the airflow around the sidepods being significantly improved.

The result of the design is increased downforce and improved cooling for the engine, thus leading to an increased level of performance. The concept also contributes to improved stability in the corners, allowing the driver to carry greater speed into and out of them.

The Alfa Romeo team have already seen the benefits of the Red Bull sidepod concept, with their cars performing strongly in recent races. The Italian outfit has been able to take advantage of the improved aerodynamics, with the cars of Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen having displayed improved levels of downforce and speed through the corners.

In addition, the improved cooling of the engine has allowed Alfa Romeo to push the limits of the car, enabling them to extract more performance from the engine. This has enabled the team to fight at the front of the field and to challenge for points in races.

The Red Bull sidepod concept has therefore provided Alfa Romeo with a range of relatively clear advantages, with the team being able to take advantage of its improved aerodynamics, cooling and stability. As such, the team are likely to continue to benefit from the concept in the future.
