Fiat and Alfa Romeo kicked out of their country? In Italy, the uncertain future of Stellantis

His hands assemble the design of the icon of the Italian automotive industry. Gianluca Rindone produces Fiat 500s every day Behind gate number 20 of Avenue Settembrini, which is 2 kilometers long and is bordered on both sides by the Stellantis factory in Mirafiori, south of Turin, this worker from more than forty years “welds the components used to assemble the work of the body,” he explains, “before the next car goes for varnishing and assembly.”

But in the next few years, his job was not guaranteed because he was building a car that didn’t sell: an electric version of the famous car. In 2023, 78,000 models are produced, missing the planned target by more than 40,000 units. And this year, its production is still decreasing. Gianluca Rindone’s team builds 220 Fiat 500e per day. Less than 50,000 designs should see the light of day by the end of the year.
