Fernando Alonso: “That was a bit of a surprise” / Formula 1

Although Fernando Alonso did not see the checkered flag in the race at the Shanghai International Circuit, the Aston Martin star was beaming as he appeared in front of the television cameras after a small race in China.

Fernando Alonso could get a really strong result in the Shanghai Sprint. But the Formula 1 veteran, who started the race from third on the grid, not only came out empty-handed at the end, he had to park his Aston Martin before the checkered flag fell. The reason for this was the unpleasant contact with the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

His compatriot at least managed to drive to the end. After the checkered flag was dropped, he complained: “He pushed me off the track, and my car confirmed that and the tires got dirty, so it went the wrong way. Things were going well up to that point, but it cost us both the race.”

Alonso himself was in a better mood when he answered questions from the media and said: “I gave myself, but unfortunately I couldn’t finish the race. But I really had a lot of fun and I have to say it was a little surprising that I was so competitive. I was second after the start and I thought the opponents would pass quickly.”

“But I was able to hold off Verstappen for a few laps and the group behind for a few more laps. But I think I put a lot of pressure on the tires there. I was fighting wheel to wheel with Carlos for a few laps and then unfortunately there was contact which led to a puncture and eventually retirement. But not too many points are distributed in the race, so the focus is on the GP,” added the two-time champion.
