Fernando Alonso has emphatically refuted claims that his new Aston Martin Formula One car is merely a re-branded Red Bull Racing model.
The two-time world champion, who is set to make his return to the sport in 2021, was unequivocal in his dismissal of the notion that Aston Martin is simply re-purposing the design of its former customers.
“It’s totally different,” Alonso said in an interview with Motorsport.com. “I think the team and Aston Martin have done an amazing job in the winter, in the design office, to come up with a totally different car. It’s not a Red Bull copy. It’s a new car, a new concept.”
Alonso suggested the fact that Aston Martin does not have a technical partnership with any other team was a key factor in the team’s ability to create a brand-new design.
“I think it’s great that the team has the resources to design their own car and to create their own concept,” he said.
The Spaniard noted that the team still has an “incredible” amount of work to do to bring the car up to speed ahead of the team’s first race in March, but he was pleased with the progress made so far.
“We are very happy with the development we have made,” Alonso said. “The car is still in its early stages, but the concept and the ideas the team has put into the car are very good. We are on the right track.”
Alonso’s comments come on the heels of reports that Aston Martin is using a similar design to Red Bull’s 2020 model. However, the 38-year-old was adamant that the team has gone to great lengths to ensure the car is totally unique.
“There is no copy. It’s totally different,” he said. “It is a new concept and I think the team has done an amazing job.”

“I think it’s great that the team has the means to design their own car and to construct their own concept,” he said.
The Spaniard observed that the team still has an “unbelievable” quantity of labor to do to bring the car up to speed prior to the team’s first race in March, but he was gratified with the progress achieved thus far.
“We are very pleased with the advancement we have made,” Alonso reported. “The car is still in its embryonic stages, but the concept and the ideas the team has injected into the car are very good. We are in the right direction.”
