Tom McCullough on Alonso: “One of the fastest” / Formula 1

The entire Aston Martin team is delighted with Fernando Alonso’s contract extension, as Tom McCullough insists. The performance engineer emphasizes how important the Spaniard is to the team’s success.

A look at the statistics confirms it: Fernando Alonso is the undisputed driving force in the Aston Martin racing team. The 2005 and 2006 world champion climbed the podium eight times last year, amassed 206 championship points and reached fourth place overall. This year the Spaniard was still not allowed on the podium, but managed to score points in all four races. He is currently ranked eighth in the World Cup.

By comparison: teammate Lance Stroll didn’t make it onto the podium once last year. With 74 World Championship points, he finished the season in tenth place overall. This year he has only finished in the top 10 in half the races so far, which means he is currently 10th in the table.

The joy that the 32-time GP star is staying in the Aston Martin team is just as great, as team boss Mike Krack has already stressed. Tom McCullough, who is responsible for the use of Alonso and Stroll’s racing cars as a performance engineer, also said of the 42-year-old’s contract extension: “That is very good news.”

“It is good that we will have Alonso even after the rule change in 2026, because since he has been with us, his skills and experience have been important in our desire to move forward in the field,” added the 48-year-old Brit, praising: ” He is still one of the fastest drivers in the field and continues to deliver top performances. I know that I speak for the entire team when I say that we are excited to continue our journey together.”
