The arrival of the all-new Nissan Leaf is an important milestone at hand

The new Nissan Leaf is coming. The Sunderland factory has stopped production of the current Leaf and now the production line can be prepared for three new electric models.

Last week, the Nissan plant in Sunderland (England) built the last copies of the current Leaf. All European market cars came off the production line there. We are talking about 280,000 units since production began in 2013. That is more than 40 percent of the number of Leafs sold worldwide (650,000 units).

3 new electric Nissans from Sunderland

Now that the current Leaf has been retired, Nissan can focus on the arrival of three new electric models: the third-generation Leaf and electric versions of Nissan Qashqai and Juke. The Japanese are investing more than 3 billion euros to prepare the car factory for the production of these EVs. Nissan does not hide the fact that Sunderland is its showcase in the field of car manufacturing.

The design of the new models is still a secret, but Nissan has already lifted the curtain on each car in the form of a concept car. The new Leaf will be based on the Quiet Concept from 2021 (photo at the top of the post), the Qashqai EV will resemble the Hyper Urban Concept (left) and electric. Nissan Juke on Hyper Punk Concept (right).

New Nissan Leaf in 2026

The 2021 Chill-Out Concept suggests that the new Leaf isn’t a rear blaster but a hybrid. This is in line with rumors that the electric family car is the same as Nissan Ariya, but small. A mini aria, if you will.

Our expectations are quite high, because the current model is very similar in terms of technology to its predecessor. We want a revolutionary new model that honors Nissan’s pioneering role in the EV field. We wish the brand the same conversation that now surrounds the new Renault 5.

The current Nissan Leaf is expected to remain available from stock for a few more months. The Dutch offering was already limited to only a model with a 39 kWh battery. The new Leaf will reportedly go into production in 2026, but we expect the media circus (read: teasers, more teasers, unveiling) to begin much earlier.
