A 51-year-old man driving over a traffic light in Schwandorf with his BMW – causing 70,000 euros worth of damage.

Around 4pm, a 51-year-old man from the suburb of Schwandorf was driving his BMW along Aussiger Strasse. Shortly before the Dresdner Straße intersection, the driver drove his car off the road to the right for unknown reasons and hit a street lamp that hung in the engine compartment.

The driver himself survived the accident unharmed. According to the police, there were no signs that the driver had consumed alcohol or drugs.

The Schwandorf Fire Department responded with nine emergency services and two vehicles, including a turntable ladder. There was a danger that the mast could topple at any moment. The mast was then taken from the turnbuckle basket to the crane hook of the tow truck and lowered to safety. A car mechanic from Lell then switched off the BMW’s high-voltage system.

The road was closed during the operation

An employee from Bayernwerk Netz also came to ensure safety. However, there was no danger because the lights are off during the day.

Comrades from the fire department, led by group leader Markus Schuster, cleared the road. During the operation, Aussiger Straße was completely closed – as was Dresdner Straße in the intersection area. Police estimated the damage at around 70,000 euros.
