Fuming Wolff could terminate Mercedes engineers as the maddened Team Principal of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team may be taking drastic measures after the series of technical issues encountered in the German Grand Prix.
The Brackley-based outfit endured a torrid outing at Hockenheim, with title leader Lewis Hamilton suffering a fuel pressure problem and Valtteri Bottas dealing with a hydraulics issue.
Team Principal Toto Wolff was seething with rage in the wake of their latest mechanical woes, and the Austrian could be prepared to wield the axe in attempt to reduce the number of glitches from the Silver Arrows squad.
“We will have to look at all areas of the team to make sure we can avoid this kind of situation in the future,” said Wolff following the German Grand Prix.
“We have a great group of talented people at this team and we need to make sure we are getting the most from them. If that means terminating contracts or making changes, then that is what we will do.”
The Mercedes’ technical issues are becoming increasingly more frequent, and the pressure is now mounting for the team’s engineers to get to the bottom of the problem.
The German Grand Prix was the third time this season that the team have been hit with technical issues, with Hamilton suffering a loss of power in the French Grand Prix and Bottas enduring a gearbox issue in Austria.
Only time will tell whether Wolff follows through on his threats, but one thing is certain – Mercedes cannot afford any more technical mishaps if they are to reclaim the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
