According to Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur, the upcoming race, the Chinese GP, will be an important test for Ferrari. In all likelihood, the race will be run in colder conditions than during the first four races of the season and Ferrari will be watching closely to see if they are even close to Red Bull under those conditions.
In the first four races of the season, Ferrari have declared themselves ‘best of the rest’ behind Red Bull. In Australia, Carlos Sainz even managed to win and Leclerc’s second place even resulted in two wins. But things also went very well during the last race in Japan.
“I think everything went well on Sunday,” Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur reflects. “The strategy was good for both our cars, the tire management was under control, the pit stops went well.”
Compared to last year, tire management on the Ferrari SF-24 is much better. Charles Leclerc’s tire strategy went very well, allowing him to finish fourth, after starting eighth. Leclerc’s brilliant strategy was completely different from that of McLaren driver Lando Norris.
“I think we will have better tire management and less tire damage from the start of the season. We managed to set a very fast lap in Jeddah. This was also the case during the Japanese GP.
Vasseur was then asked if Ferrari could keep up with Verstappen and Red Bull in colder conditions. Vasseur’s focus shifted to the next race in China. According to Vasseur, the race will be an important test for Ferrari due to the colder conditions.
“I think China gives us an opportunity to be tested under better conditions,” Vasseur said. “But I don’t know. I’m not sure we’re in the best shape. You don’t know the other team’s engine settings and fuel levels.”
