Judgment of the commissioners

Aston Martin’s protest has failed. No further action from the FIA: “(…) The Federal team explained that the vehicle was able to be restarted within a reasonable time.”

“The duration is generally 30 seconds, but it can vary depending on the context. From the FIA’s point of view it was important that the car did not receive any external assistance in the restart (for example from the stewards).

After accepting this argument with Aston Martin, the Federal document states that “the debate has moved on to time: is 1 minute and 17 seconds too long?”

Similar events in Canada, Monaco and Baku were observed.

In conclusion it reads: “We considered that, although the actual application of article 39.6 justified the stricter measures, the custom of the sport would not justify overriding the decision of the Direction of Race by us the Stewards.”

Q2, the second qualifying heat, continues as Carlos Sainz takes the final corner of the Shanghai circuit with high hopes. The Spaniard hits the gravel hard, loses his rear end and spins, hitting the opposite wall.. The Ferrari is damaged, the front wing is missing and the red remains on the track.

The commissioners’ decision is quick: Red Flag. The red flag helps Sainz, who can restart his car, can return the SF-24 to the pits and can resume qualifying. Fortunately for the Madrilenian, Ferrari “only” needs a wing change. After returning to the track the Ferrari driver will end the session in Q3 placing himself in seventh place.

At the end of the credits, however, something unexpected happens. News comes of Aston Martin’s official protest against the Chinese doctor’s qualifying results.

The reason for the protest

What happened to Sainz’s Ferrari in Q2 is under the British team’s magnifying glass. In fact, the team of Alonso and Stroll claims what was described byArticle 39.6 of the Sporting Regulations for the 2024 season.

The accusation is that this regulatory step was violated in the case of Sainz in Q2. Selection of team representatives and commissioners at 6.00 pm local time by race commissioners, or 12 Italian.

The relevant article brought to the direction of the race is as follows. “Any driver whose car stops on the track during qualifying will not be allowed to rejoin the session.”
