Audi A3 Note: Defective seat belts are possible

Audi is recalling 20,500 A3, S3 and RS 3 cars worldwide. In Germany, 6,700 cars are affected. Reason: Possible problems with the front seat belts.

The reason for the recall is the belt reel with limited performance. “The seat belt adjustment systems of the front seats may have a lower restraining force in the event of an accident. In the event of an accident, an increased risk of injury cannot be completely excluded,” says Audi. As a result of low grip strength, the body can slide too far forward in the seat; the seating position then no longer conforms to the general system of restraints. “In regular driving there is no danger,” assures the manufacturer.

“Don’t transport children in the passenger seat!”

Audi recommends, however, “not using the front passenger seat to transport children until the seat belts have been replaced if the seat is locked or the child is restrained using the front passenger seat belt.” According to Audi, the potentially defective belts are part of rare special equipment with an early production date (2018 to 01/26/2022). Only the current generation is affected (only market launch in 2020) and only cars “with adjustable front seat belt”. It is not yet clear what optional equipment the belts are for.

These models can be affected by recall:

  • Audi A3 from the production period 2018 to 2022 (A3 and RS 3: worldwide: 20,500 vehicles / throughout Germany: 6,700 vehicles)
  • Audi A3 (USA) from production period July 26, 2021 to January 26, 2022 (US: 2,221 vehicles)
  • AudiRS3 from the production period 2018 to 2022
  • Audi S3 (USA) from production period July 8, 2021 to January 25, 2022 (US: 363 vehicles)

Owners of affected vehicles in Germany will be registered according to the chassis number and the front seat belts will be replaced. The car can continue to be used until it is repaired. The manufacturer has not received any customer complaints and is not aware of any personal injuries.

The KBA recall number is 012007, the recall manufacturer code is 68I2. The recall can be found at NHTSA under case number 22V-515.

Conclusion

Due to a low-performance belt tensioner, there may be an increased risk of injury in the event of an accident on certain Audi A3 models. A lot would have to come together for this, so far no events are known. But Audi is recalling 20,500 compact cars worldwide and 6,700 in Germany.
