I dare to say that the Audi e-tron GT is the most beautiful car with “four rings” produced right now. But does it run as good as it looks? I decided to check it out.

It just looks good

Audi e-tron GT, already on first pictures provided by the manufacturer, it looked very attractive. This is an exception these days, because with many other cars, the first pictures are not very encouraging and only direct contact makes my heart beat faster and I start to understand the whole project.

I believe we are dealing with one of the most beautiful electricians, which in terms of beauty probably loses with it Porsche Taycanwho – interestingly enough – is the twin brother of the main character of this text. I really like the final effect achieved with the projects. Well, the Audi e-tron GT looks so modern that Tony Stark drove it in the Avengers movie, but we don’t have the “futuristic excitement” that we can encounter in the case of other electric technicians who pretend to be cars from a car. almost later.

Let’s stay with the appearance of electric Audi inside Avengers: Endgame. While watching the movie, I noticed a little curiosity. On the model that Tony Stark rode, you can hear the sound of a large internal combustion engine. Audi, on the other hand, is a fully electric car. Sure, there’s noise at low speeds due to EU regulations, but it doesn’t sound like an internal combustion engine. Let’s assume that Stark modified his copy to make the speaker sound different from the factory.

But let’s get back to the Audi e-tron GT, which I had the pleasure of driving for a few days. The car is about 5 meters long, over 2.1 meters wide (including mirrors), and its curb weight is about 2.2 tons. We must admit that we are dealing with a very large car, but it is not necessary to feel inside.

In the driver’s seat, we are surrounded by various interior elements, which make the car seem smaller than it really is. However, it cannot be said that there is not enough space – we get a space comparable to the Audi A6. It’s not very pleasant at the back when we are more than 1.8 m tall. Due to the low sloping roof, there can be enough bedrooms.

However, I think that for the designers of the Audi e-tron GT, the back seat was not a priority. The design was even more important, along with the main guidelines of the project, given that this electrician will be used primarily by two people sitting in the front. The electric Audi wasn’t really meant to be a family car.

Most of all, it’s fun to drive

Audi e-tron GT is not only the most beautiful Audi, but also the best to drive, which can be felt especially in corners. The quattro car powered by two electric motors, the first on the front axle and the second on the rear axle, provides excellent traction. In addition, there is a low center of gravity. All of this meant that during the tests I was expecting more hilly roads to be able to test the possibilities offered by this car.

I would like to add that the corner grip is so high that I was afraid to use the full potential of the Audi e-tron GT. I knew the corner could be taken at a higher speed, but I had an inner barrier – the car could do it, but not me.

In terms of driving experience, it is closer to a Porsche than a regular Audi. This should come as no surprise as the e-tron GT is based on a platform that was also used in the Porsche Taycan. This means that we will find many common solutions. However, it should be borne in mind that Audi focuses more on the comfort of travel, and not on setting the best times on the track. Despite this, it certainly lacks sporting qualities.

There is also no shortage of power. The test sample was marked with the number 60, which means that The electric Audi has two electric motors, producing a total of 350 kW (476 hp) and 630 Nm of torque. This translates to a speed of 0-100 km / h in 4.5 seconds. The maximum speed is 245 km / h.

However, this is not the end, because the Audi e-tron GT offers a boost mode, which temporarily increases the power output to bring driving pleasure to the highest level. In this case, we already have 390 kW (530 hp), 640 Nm, a. “Hundred” on digital clocks will appear after 4.1 seconds. For comparison, the powerful Audi RS7 takes 3.7 seconds, but we are talking here about the representative of the RS sports category.

One more solution should be mentioned, also known from Porsche Taycan, which is unique in the world of electric cars. Well, there is a 2-speed gearbox on board. Audi usually drives in second gear, which is thought to translate to lower energy consumption. What’s more, from this ratio also begins to move. However, in Dynamic mode, and when we press the accelerator pedal hard in Comfort mode, the electronics shift to first gear to ensure better performance.

Changing the gear ratio from the second to the first, when we decide to accelerate effectively, it seems – a clear jerk, almost like in a sports combustion car. Along with raising the speed, the second gear is thrown in, although this change is not very noticeable.

Audi returned to dual screens

For several years now, we can find as many as in the new Audi models of the upper parts three screens are on the dashboard. The first, located behind the steering wheel, is a set of digital clocks. The second and third are already in the middle – one of them is a control center for the infotainment system and car functions, and the second is used to control the climate, selected car functions, and also allows you to enter text, for example, a. destination in navigation.

I expected that the modern and computerized Audi e-tron GT would also have three screens. In addition, I was hoping digital mirrors would be offered as an option, as in Audi e-tron Sportback. The company from Ingolstadt not only did not put digital glasses, but also put two screens and more physical buttons.

This method is not necessarily bad. Sure, it doesn’t look modern, but on the other hand, even the climate control panel is much easier to use. It is possible that the removal of the third screen is due to the characteristics of the car. After all, it is intended for drivers who need a sports driving experience, and then looking for the right button on the screen is not very pleasant, and even safe.

The infotainment system, apart from a few features designed for an electric car, is almost the same in all. The newest Audi. The exception is the virtual cockpit, i.e. digital clocks. Different images are introduced here, which is understandable – for example, it is no longer necessary to show information about engine revolutions. The screen size is 12.3 inches.

However, we still have the same display modes found on digital watches, namely a screen that focuses on providing important driving and vehicle information, a multimedia screen and a navigation screen. We can put the full navigation behind the wheel, thanks to which the central screen remains free and we can even use it to show the interface constantly. Apple CarPlay or the radio.

The main screen, by modern standards, is not very large. It is “only” 10.1 inches. However, it is enough for comfortable use of the infotainment system, including the navigation display. Although operation is touch-based, we can easily switch between individual functions. On the left edge there are individual icons that allow you to switch navigation, music player, Apple CarPlay or just with one touch. Android Auto or vehicle settings.

The infotainment system, called by the manufacturer Audi MMI, works quickly, responds effectively to user commands, and I did not notice any cuts. The list of advantages also includes a small and simple interface, as well as model and wireless integration with Apple CarPlay. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to see how Android Auto works.

Since we are in the interior, it is also important to mention the quality of the work. Here we are dealing with high quality and perfect fit of features. I have noticed that in the new Audi the folding is not as high as it was a few years ago, but this is not the case with the Audi e-tron GT. Even under strong pressure and vibration, nothing is heard and does not make disturbing sounds. Well done Audi! Now I would like to ask you to apply the same method to all the cars for sale.

If only the range was greater…

Audi e-tron GT is equipped with a battery capacity of 93.4 kWh (gross), of which 83.7 kWh (net) is available. The manufacturer says that the range on a fully charged battery should be 453-488 km according to WLTP. It is possible that such results will be found in the city, and drive very slowly. Unfortunately, it is difficult to drive many kilometers under normal conditions.

The e-tron electric GT is a car designed to quickly absorb the next few kilometers on the highway – it’s fast, comfortable and very quiet. It is a pity that by driving more powerfully, having these 140 km / h, we will reach 300-350 km. Indeed, it allows you to move around Poland comfortably, stopping especially at the fastest chargers. However, in a car of this class, which encourages long trips and driving on fast roads, the rate should be 450-500 km.

It becomes even better in the mixed circuit, which we can calculate 400 km without sacrifice. Of course, if we want to use the power of both electric motors all the time and decide to drive the car with power, we have to accept the range, which will not be more than 350 km.

If there is a need to charge, and we have a super fast charger, charging to 80% should only take 22.5 minutes. This is possible thanks to the on-board installation, which allows you to charge with an impressive 270 kW.

Unfortunately, in Poland we will not have the opportunity to use such fast chargers and we will stop more often at points that provide 90-150 kW along the way. Indeed, we have, for example, Ionita chargers, which can reach 350 kW, but there are few of them. Furthermore, not all of them work as intended – I suggest you consider the Ionity charger on the Nowostawy MOP between Warsaw and Łódź.

Audi e-tron GT has only one major drawback

Electricity Audi e-tron GT it is one of those cars that draws energy from the battery, which can convince even the weakest fans of combustion engines to electromobility.

Sure, it doesn’t look like a car with a V8 under the hood and we cruise quietly, but it’s a fun ride to drive. After all, we have good driving, good handling and high road grip. As I said before, taking in every corner is a lot of fun. In addition, there is excellent performance and high-quality craftsmanship. There is also no fault in the infotainment system used.

It’s a pity that the Audi e-tron GT is so eager to absorb the energy stored in the battery. As a result, we have to consider a distance of 300-350 km on the road. Well, it’s good that at least we can use super fast chargers, charging the battery quite efficiently.
