Chinese production plant in Taizhou is switching to natural gas

A ‘carbon-free’ future involves not only electric vehicles, but also zero-emission infrastructure and industries. Volvo has been working on this topic for some time and today announced the transfer of the production plant to Taizhou (China) for biogas, reducing more than 7,000 tons of CO2 per year.

“We act quickly when alternative energy sources with no climate impact are available – he explains Javier VarelaChief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO of Volvo – The switch to biogas at the Taizhou plant shows how each of our production sites around the world defines its own non-climate energy mix, based on what is available in a specific region of geographically”.

Zero impact heating

The Taizhou factory already used climate-neutral electricity, but with the introduction of biogas now too heating of the system is zero effect. The power supply for the Taizhou factory includes electricity and heat.

About 40% of the electricity demand is produced by solar panels is placed on the site, and the percentage is expected to increase in the coming years. The remaining 60 percent comes from the national grid and in turn is made up of photovoltaic electricity, which is not climate-friendly.

Volvo’s goals

The Swedish company, in recent months, had announced the goal of making production operations climate-neutral by 2025 and reducing emissions in all operations worldwide. This goal is part of a broader goal to achieve greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
