Saarlouis (dpa) – The industrial union IG Metall and the Ford Labor Council do not want to accept Ford’s management decision against the Saarlouis area. “Metalworkers will use all means to protect themselves against the bankruptcy of the Ford site,” explained IG Metall district station chief Jörg Köhlinger on Wednesday. If management does not agree, Ford will face “state-wide opposition,” it said.
The coalition spoke of “an inappropriate and brutal bidding competition between Ford areas in Valencia and Saarlouis”. The Saarlouis website, with its current staff of 4,600, should be “dealt with in pieces”. Along with the distributor park, nearly 6,600 jobs are threatened in Saarland. Ford announced Wednesday that it has selected Valencia, Spain, as the location for the manufacture of new electric cars – and therefore not Saarlouis.
IG Metall and the Ford Labor Council claimed the future prospects of the Ford area in Saarlouis and called for a struggle to find a location and a job. “Without regard to Saarlouis, we will not accept the group’s decision,” said IG Metall Völklingen’s director general, Lars Desgranges.
Köhlinger said the crew did their best to keep the Ford area in Saarlouis in a competitive position over the past three years. They would also accept part-time work, reduce shifts and reduce workload. “Instead of working with staff to find the area, management has put its hands on its thighs. Now the whole region is threatened with exclusion.”
According to Ford Markus Thal chairman of the work council, more than 2,500 jobs have been cut in Saarlouis since 2018. “We did, the leadership promised us empty promises. We feel cheated and betrayed by Ford Europe management!”
