Almost all products come with the development of electronic propulsion and automation functions. Citroen is no different, but the brand does more than that. Citroën has been emphasizing comfort for several years now. And with Citroen, comfort begins with the appearance, simply because in a good car the driver can feel comfortable.

That is why the C5 AirCross design has been significantly redesigned. Previously, the car had smooth shapes that made this SUV not difficult, but accessible and almost embraced. The purpose of this lift is to give the C5 AirCross a more attractive appearance.

A strip of LEDs now passes over the grille slats, visually connecting the lights. The lower bumper shape was previously playful, with rectangles in different colors. Starting in the model year 2022, the lower bumper is stiff, and the lower edge (“skid plate”) emphasizes the width and shape of the air takes height.

So the updated C5 AirCross looks great, while the external specifications remain the same. Citroën prefers this look because this mid-sized SUV is now located at the bottom of the section. In other words: the competitors of the latest date are almost all the biggest and thanks to the new look, the C5 AirCross seems to be no less than.

Space and appearance

As noted earlier, Citroën has focused entirely on comfort in recent years. That is why so much attention is paid to the interior during this remodeling treatment. This is covered with a new material that, thanks to its dark color and soft texture, shines better than ever before.

The main “secret” behind the comfort of the latest Citroen models is the seats. They incorporate a clever combination of materials, which makes them soft and at the same time provide useful support. What Citroën also does is very subtle: so-called “High Comfort”the seats are larger than average and that makes the whole car feel bigger and more comfortable. To lift it all, the front seats (too) are equipped with heating and massage function.

How the back seat looks good depends on the size of the passenger. The back seat is very high. For children this means a great sense of freedom, but for adults it gives a little headache.

The screen for voice, communication and navigation system is now different from the dashboard. Or as Citroën says aloud: the screen appears to float. Basic electronic equipment remains the same, so the C5 AirCross does not benefit from the improvements made by other designs. The reason for this is simple: the car is built around technology and surface lift provides ample opportunity to build in new equipment (required for new software).

Despite its age, the infotainment system is not considered obsolete. The C5 AirCross is also moderate in terms of safety, but certainly not outdated.


Because a new infotainment system computer is not enough, but it is clear that a completely new engine certainly does not fit into the existing C5 AirCross. To some extent because Citroën no longer invests in the design of combustion engines, the operation remains the same. And that is the problem! At the same time, similar electric cars are for sale that cost the same as the C5 AirCross, while they are cheaper (and cleaner!). Any engine selected: the buyer carefully chooses to pay more for a more sophisticated car. Just the suction capacity (broken up to 1,300 kg) can be a factor in choosing an internal combustion engine.

The plan includes a 130 hp gasoline engine and a 225 hp hybrid plug (gasoline plus electric motor). Hybrid was selected for this experiment. This semi-electric variant starts in complete silence and moves with a flexibility that no combustion engine can match. At the same time, the plug-in hybrid is invigorating, because power is immediately available, allowing this SUV to move quickly through traffic if it wants. Likewise, there is always more than enough stock available at high speeds to add to it with great flexibility.

For a full battery, 50 miles can be completely covered with electricity. After that, the battery is completely empty and the remaining energy is used to support the gasoline engine for some time. The interaction between the two engines is smooth, smooth and without shock. Thanks to sound-insulating glass (from now on hybrid level), noise from the wind is also minimal.

Citroën has not updated the chassis and therefore the updated C5 AirCross does not run differently from the previous one. However, thanks for “Continuous rivers of water” that is still very different from most opponents! Thanks to these special shock absorbers, the car reacts differently to large and small bumps and at high or low speeds.

In practice, the added value of this special chassis depends on the condition. If the condition is serious, the difference from normal suspension is nonexistent. In addition, it is important to note that the effect cannot be compared with air suspension or adaptive suspension. Such techniques over time make undercarriage hard or soft. What Citroën’s “liquid streams” do is respond to it more or less slowly, giving the car a calmer response and a more elegant character.

Citroën has redesigned the C5 AirCross for the model year 2022. As it is only a matter of appearance, the car has no better handling, performance has not improved and usage has not been reduced. That is a disadvantage, because now electric cars cost the same as the copies with the combustion engine, it is exactly the car that makes the C5 AirCross less competitive. However, within the lift range, it was not possible to give the C5 AirCross a brand new power train.

That’s why Citroën has focused more on what makes the C5 AirCross unique: its character. The redesigned front offers the most modern and confident car. The new material looks good and feels good too. The seats especially provide more comfort and even greater feeling. The special chassis with hydrological cushions has already ensured unique handling and still does† In conclusion: after raising the face for the 2022 model year, the Citroën C5 AirCross has not improved, but it has become more attractive.
