Infiniti G37 or BMW 3 Series Coupe: which one to choose?

Used car prices have increased over the past two years. A reader recently shared with us his desire to find a luxury villa with a sporty character, and told us he was considering older models to pay less for the purchase. More precisely, he seemed to put his eyes onInfiniti G37 or BMW 3 Series Coupe.

We note that these two vehicles were replaced in 2014 by Q60 and Series 4, respectively. Which is the best option?

First of all, let’s point out that each has four seats and that the front occupants are more pampered than the other two. The Japanese offer a more spacious interior, but its German rival responds with a larger trunk.

On both sides, a six-speed manual gearbox was on the menu, so this is recommended for better driving sensations. Otherwise, the alternative is a six- or seven-speed automatic.

The G37 was only available with a 3.7-liter V6 producing 330 or 348 horsepower in the IPL (Infiniti Performance Line) version. Power can be sent to all four wheels or only to the rear depending on the model. Note that this naturally aspirated engine is proven and generally more reliable, so it is less expensive to maintain.

As for the 3 Series CoupĂ©, there are several versions, some with rear-wheel drive and others with xDrive all-wheel drive. The base six-cylinder 328i only makes 230 horsepower, while the 335i/335is, also a six-cylinder but supercharged, produces 300 or 320 horsepower. It’s certainly one of the best engines in the category, but beware of its condition! Then, let’s not forget the monstrous M3 with its 414-horsepower V8.

On the road, the G37, while relatively powerful and precise, takes on a more fluid and comfort-oriented demeanor. The 3 Series Coupé shows more durability and sportiness, enough to please the driver but perhaps less so than other passengers. Also, its iDrive multimedia system causes frustration while driving.

In the end, it is undoubtedly the prestige and image associated with the Bavarian manufacturer’s logo that may tip the scales in the minds of some buyers. But don’t overlook the G37, which is generally less expensive and more convenient for everyday users.
