Mazda CX-80, petrol plug-in hybrid or small diesel hybrid

Samuel 20/04/2024 – A very rare choice.

Mazda has always had a technological disadvantage. It is the last to offer a rotary engine, even if it is in the form of a range extender, and 2 years ago, it surprised everyone with the launch of a 6-cylinder diesel. It was under the hood of the CX-60, here is its big brother.
Mazda CX-80Like the Renault Austral and Espace, the Mazda CX-80 owes a lot to the CX-60. This large model is basically a stretched version of the CX-60, with a wheelbase increased by 25 cm. It’s a lot. On the Mercedes S class, which has been around with 2 wheels for more than half a century, there is only 11 cm between the short and long versions.
Mazda CX-80The purpose is not only to provide more space for the legs of the rear passengers, it is a question here of making a car with 7 seats, while the CX-60 has only 5. So there is a third row of seats, but as our model shows, access will limit its use for children.
Mazda CX-80But there will be a lot of luggage space in the 5-seat configuration, 687 liters, and this may be the reason to buy for many. In terms of speed, there is a big change compared to the CX-60, because although it was previously available in a 2-wheel drive version, the CX-80 is all-wheel drive.
Mazda CX-80The driver then has a choice between 2 hybrid engines. A gasoline plug-in hybrid, with a large 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine associated with a 129 kW electric machine, which is powered by a 17.8 kWh battery. The total power is 327 hp, and the torque of 500 Nm is enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds. And so there is also a big diesel. 3.3-liter 6-cylinder engine with 254 hp, with electricity and a 48-volt system. It is not responsive, it needs 8.4 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km / h, but the Germans will see its maximum speed. 219 km/h compared to 195 km/h for the plug-in hybrid.
Mazda CX-80Prices start at €63,100 for the plug-in hybrid, and €72,150 for the diesel. Available with 2 different seats in the second row, or a 3-seat bench, the Mazda CX-80 is also surprising in that it does not look like an extended car. With a roof line raised by 26 mm, and very careful cutting of glass surfaces, the car is elegant. It’s more than a CX-60 that looks short now!
