For several weeks now, we had not seen the workers at work at the construction site in Piazza Zara. Since February 29, during the excavation an old asbestos pipe was found, probably dating back to the 1950s, placed in the spring. A situation that required cleaning and inspection of the area, at the end of which the work – which started at the beginning of last autumn – did not start again. So the seaside resorts of Terrazza della Repubblica, who have been living with construction sites for years now, sought information from the Municipality. And yesterday Mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro, through a video message distributed on social networks, confirmed that there are indeed “problems with the company that won the tender”.

The contract for the seafront extension had been withdrawn from work already done on the entire Palladian pavement, and awarded to a company from Southern Italy. An intervention worth 1 million and 200 thousand euros, which the company (preventing delays due to bad weather) should provide, completed, on April 30. “While the parallel intervention of the circular/pedestrian path and the regeneration of the park continues regularly – Del Ghingaro goes into detail – several issues have arisen with the company dealing with Piazza Zara, due to a series of economic requests and the suspension of activities “. It culminated on February 29 with the discovery of the Eternit pipe, “At that time the company officially asked the management to confirm if there was any asbestos contamination in the ground. We – continues the Mayor – said through our technicians that there was no contamination problem, but the company insisted and stopped everything.

Once the analysis report arrived, the Municipality, through the director of works, wrote to the company, “Requesting – continues Del Ghingaro – to resume operations and fill in ten days the gap of delays accumulated in recent weeks “. If this is not done “We will assign the work to the second winner in the tender, because it is not acceptable to insist on various excuses for delaying the work or asking for additional money”. By the beginning of the season the administration wants to inaugurate the new Piazza Zara, for which a work of art has already been commissioned “which – concludes Del Ghingaro – will decorate this wonderful view of the sea”.
