Because of electric cars: There is a risk of redundancies at Ford Cologne

Ford is investing heavily to make the Cologne location suitable for its announced future as an electric car maker. From 2030, the American group wants to offer only fully electric cars in Europe. Many jobs may be affected by the changes in Cologne.

Management wants to cut up to 3,200 jobs in the next two to two and a half years, reported the deputy head of the Ford Works works council, Katharina von Hebe. That would be the highest number for the “worst case”. At the beginning of the year, Ford still had 14,000 workers in Cologne. For workers, the situation is “broken”, said the labor councilor. “His colleagues are scared and they are not quite sure how things will continue with them.”

According to the lever, the administration legitimizes the measure with the central government in the USA, among other things. The chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, Christian Joisten, spoke of “the shock of all of us in Cologne” and warned of the “industrial instability of our country and our region”. A new strategy is needed.

Ford has already been reformed; three years ago the company still had around 18,000 employees in the Rhine city. Cologne local time and investment in billions will be converted for the production of new electric models, however, production at the Saarlouis plant is about to end. According to reports, the Chinese group BYD, which is entering Europe with electric cars, may buy the area.

In Cologne, according to car week from vulnerable positions up to 700 in administration and up to 2500 in product development. “We’ve put a big wave of restructuring behind us in the past few years,” said a member of the works council in Hebe, shaking his head.

By adding “household affairs” as a new brand layout and a deeper reconciliation in the United States, with the intention of justifying the management of Ford, mentioned von Hebe the result of supply constraints – for example in the case of semiconductors – and the economic situation in Europe.

The automaker itself did not want to comment on “current rumors about possible restructuring at Ford in Europe”. However, the spokesman referred to accelerated plans for the creation of a fully electric vehicle portfolio in Europe. “These changes will bring significant changes to the way we design, build and sell Ford vehicles and will affect our future organizational structure,” it said. Details will be announced once arrangements are finalized and staff have been notified.
