Cadillac Racing and Chip Ganassi, the end of the race: divorce at the end of 2024

Cadillac Racing and Chip Ganassi will participate in WEC and IMSA at the end of 2024: after the official announcement, the team market will open.

The story of Chip Ganassi Racing con Cadillac in IMSA It is in WEC turns towards the conclusion: yesterday evening in fact the official declarations arrived from General Motorsports and the American team, who confirm that after four seasons together the contract will not be renewed for the next season.

The message to the press of General Motors is laconic:

“Over the years, our GM divisions have had a successful partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing in several series: NASCAR, INDYCAR, EXTREME-E, IMSA and FIA WEC.

Together we have won many races and achieved great success. We will continue to strive to win races and championships together in IMSA and FIA WEC this year.

Our plans for sports cars in 2025 will be announced later.

Jim Campbell, Vice President GM Performance and Sports America:

Chip Ganassi Racing, historically one of IndyCar’s top two teams along with Penske since 1990, entered covered wheels in 2004, in the Grand AM championship, continuing in that series even when it merged with ALMS to become the current IMSA Sportscar Championship. The team ran official Ford programs for years, first the Daytona Model program, then the program Ford GT in WEC and IMSA until 2019. After a hiatus, Chip Ganassi returned to IMSA with Cadillac, officially changing himself. Cadillac Racing in 2022, winning the 12 Hours of Sebring that same year and lining up WEC the only example of V-Series.R signed up for full seasons in 2023 and 2024.

Action Express doubles up in IMSA

However, the two-year contract with General Motors for the GTP and Hypercar was expiring, and the parties chose not to renew it, without giving a clear reason. Second RACER.comhowever the IMSA program will probably be completely taken over by Action Express, which won the 2023 IMSA driver and team title for the #31 V-Series.R, also contributing to the Cadillac manufacturers name. As already happened with Wayne Taylor Racing Andretti and Acura, the Action Express program should be twofold.

Who will present the Cadillac V-Series.R in the WEC?

The most unclear thing is what will happen to Cadillac’s WEC program: it will definitely not be shelved, instead, RACER is still talking about doubling the American V8s, but with whom?

The list of expected teams is very long: let’s begin Sports Unionalways in the multi-program Hypercar race, as well as the complex McLaren program, then we continue with TF Sportwhich from this year will present the new Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the WEC.

Other teams to consider are:

  • JOTA Sporta Porsche customer, but as a result he could aim for a contract as an official team
  • Vector Sportsinitially signed as a factory team for the new Isotta Fraschini, the contract was then resoundingly passed to Duqueine, with the English team looking for a new option ever since.
  • Inter Europol has said that it is targeting Hypercars in the near future
  • Algarve Pro Tournamentcontroller in ELMS and is also in the US and Mass strike

About Chip Ganassi Racing, the prospect becomes interesting: it currently puts five cars in IndyCar, making further expansion in the series impossible, and has also left the Extreme E program, again in collaboration with Cadillac. For the WEC CGR has broken new ground in Stuttgartand it seems hard to believe in the separation of the WEC and IMSA programs.
