Genesis does not compete to compete in the mass market. The brand is owned by Hyundai Group and is intended to take customers whose lowest price is second to none. With a little skill, good money can be made in such a way, as long as the manufacturer uses technology from a platform under a refined surface that distributes widely in its array. The Hyundai Group makes the most of this, because the Beginning GV60 Sport plus shares a technical base with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (test) and the Kia EV6 (test). Where does he come from? Exit first.

Visually, the three models are very different, with the most expensive representative being shorter at 4.51 m. The space is still good. Once you log in, it becomes clear what Hyundai wants to use to distinguish its elegant Start brand from the others: Koreans are planning a material war, so to speak, because the GV60 is tightly packed inside. Everything seems so elegant that the Audi Q4 seems to have been significantly improved by comparison. German manufacturers were once the leaders in making something look superficial on the surface. Brands such as Volvo and Genesis now feature a celebrity in this area that Volkswagen Group no longer offers.

Dashboard is similar in design and newer versions. There is actually a type board that puts two large displays. The operation is largely intuitive, which is not the case. It is a pity that the voice control does not work to the extent that you can buy from Mercedes for a lot of money since 2018. It is also a pity that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay cannot be connected wirelessly.

The old dashboard is getting real implementation again – as in the Genesis GV60.

The extra price compared to 1460 euros is the digital replacement of outdoor mirrors with cameras and screens on the doors. This first event took place in the afternoon. After the experience of my colleague Clemens Gleich from Honda e with a similar system, we highly recommend trying it out at Genesis in the evening and in the dark. After all, the buyer in the GV60 has the option to save money.

Technically, at first glance, there is no difference between Ioniq 5 and EV6 – it is not surprising, because the Genesis GV60 uses the “Global Season Platform”. The voltage level is also here at 800 volts, which makes unique charging speeds possible. The 77 kWh battery is fully charged, provided the strings play together. This includes setting up an air-conditioned battery and, of course, a well-equipped charging infrastructure. Then a peak charge capacity of more than 200 kW is possible. Here, too, 18 minutes are promised for a payment from 10 to 80 percent.

Start offers a dual storage configuration in the GV60. The electric motor on the rear axle always provides up to 160 kW, the power is reduced through the drive on the front axle. In the basic model there is up to 74 kW, in the Sport Plus 160 kW version. In the most powerful variant, the driver can achieve an additional 40 kW output in ten seconds – then the 360 ​​kW that Genesis announces in the price list is available.

Empty, the GV60 Sport plus already weighs 2145 kg. However, the driving performance is more than just light. Start promises four seconds per sprint up to 100 km / h To put it in context: the top GV60 model is playing in the BMW M4 league with manual transmission. It is only over 235 km / h. However, these data only describe the real feeling of incomplete driving. More power is available once in every situation than can be used with a sense of responsibility in normal traffic. Whether crossing the road or connecting on a highway: Heavy SUVs make it easily impressive.

Typical consumption is 19.1 kWh / 100 km, according to the on-board computer we came with 19.6 kWh on this first trip. This calculation excludes billing losses, which the user must pay as well. It also depends on the charging method: The loss is greater through a 230 volt socket than through a wall box or public charging infrastructure. The beginning claims a distance of 466 kilometers. Because the question continues to arise: no, battery content, usage and frequencies are not linearly related when specifying WLTP values. In this article, we have discussed why this is so.

Despite the potential for speeding, Genesis has refrained from imitating extremely fast-moving dynamics. The test car had 21-inch wheels. The flexible optional chassis handles uneven road surfaces with confidence, even in the Sports program, without annoying inconvenience and largely without difficulty. If necessary, the rear end of the outer curve is adjusted to adjust the rear support to the driving environment without compromising comfort – we only knew from the expensive BMW and Mercedes seats.

The Genesis GV60 is a well-designed, luxurious and highly accelerated E-SUV, which the manufacturer sells under the self-proclaimed luxury brand label. You will have already guessed: The new price breaker is not coming to the market here. At least 56,370 euros are from the base model with 234 kW, for the top model with 320 kW it is at least 71,010 euros. The pilot car with a few extra packages cost more than 84,000 euros. Just as a gentle reminder: We’re talking about an SUV here, which is similar to the VW Tiguan (experiment). So Genesis certainly isn’t targeting the big market with the GV60.
