Jonas Gerckens, the Belgian sailor who finished 5th in the 2021 Transat Jacques Vabre, announces the sale of his VOLVO 164 Class40 after only two seasons.
The news may seem surprising, but Jonas Gerckens leaves no doubt about it:
“I will spend the 2023 season on the VOLVO 164, including the famous Transat Jacques Vabre race. Then I will sell my boat to sail from 2024 and the following years for the new Class40 project, which will be launched in the autumn of 2023.”
So Jonas Gerckens is still interested in continuing his work in Class40 and has already announced that he wants to participate in the GLOBE 40, a 6-stage world tour that will take place from 2025 to 2026. He aims to be the winner with many Belgian crews. .
“In addition, the 2024 program is already well filled with QuĂ©bec-Saint-Malo and the Atlantic Cup (Charleston – NY – Portland). Regarding the future boat, the information is still a secret at the moment, but it promises a great competition. on the sea!”
On Thursday 18 May 2023, Jonas will start the Armen Race (a multi-day race from La Trinité-sur-Mer) in a VOLVO 164, driven by Benoit Hantzperg (FRA), Djemila Tassin (BEL) and Henri Demesmaeker. (BEL). This early season race will allow the skipper to test himself against other competitors, try some of the pearls of the Belgian sea, but also do a full training session before the start of the 2023 season.
This race and the following races will serve as preparations for the main race of the year, the Transat Jacques Vabre, which connects Le Havre and Fort de France (Martinique). As in 2021, Jonas has chosen Benoit Hantzperg as co-captain. In 2021, the pair reached 4th place in the Volvo 164.
