HJ Beaujean uses a Volvo FMX Electric 8×4 crane

HJ Beaujean Transport & Grondverzet from Hoensbroek has put its first Volvo FMX Electric 8×4 crane truck into service. Electric truck with truck crane and hooklift system is used for infrastructure projects. The FMX was produced by Volvo Trucks dealer Nebim Elsloo.

For Volvo FMX Electric, HJ Beaujean Transport & Earthmoving supplies equipment for road construction and infrastructure projects. “We have been working for BESIX Infra Holland for many years, which works in road construction, among other things,” says Guido Beaujean, general manager. “Two years ago we started thinking about how we can make our transportation more sustainable. You have to do processes like this together and that’s why we started looking for cooperation. This is how we started talking to BESIX Infra, which also wants to take steps to be more sustainable. Finally, we decided to take a leap of faith and go for an electric truck. It was obvious that we would choose Volvo Trucks, they are very far ahead with electric trucks.

Fully self-help

The Volvo FMX Electric 8×4 tridem has just been released. The truck is equipped with a 19-tonne Hiab crane and a 21-tonne Multilift system to change the loading platform. “With this configuration, the driver can load, unload and move equipment around the area completely independently,” says Beaujean. “With the Volvo FMX Electric we transport sand, aggregates and paving equipment and remove soil, stone debris and more from projects in South Limburg. BESIX Infra has its asphalt plant in Roermond. We also use this vehicle for maintenance projects Asphalt. We needed to be able to drive at least 150 kilometers per day and that we must be able to operate the crane for loading and unloading for at least four hours. The crane mounted on the truck and the hook lifting system are also used on the truck battery packs of batteries of 90 kW each. We have a charging station in our Hoensbroek branch for charging.”

“During the setup, we had great help from a Nebim representative to design a concept, in collaboration with Hiab Benelux Elsloo, to make our wishes technically possible. He always thought and provided the information we needed. We sat together several times and sometimes went back to the drawing board For example, we discussed the best axle configuration several times and finally chose the tridem axle configuration because this solution provides the best weight distribution over the axle. As a result, the combination truck has a GVW of 37 tons about 15 tons.”

Beaten

The first works with the Volvo FMX Electric are now complete. “On the first day that our driver Luuk was working with the truck, local residents approached him and told him how quiet the truck is. The road workers on site also had to get used to not having to shout to be understood. From my own experience I can say that this truck It drives really nice and well. You don’t feel like you’re driving a truck at all, it looks like a passenger car.”

The past and the future came together during the Volvo FMX Electric launch party. The new acquisition was next to a Volvo L495 Titan that Beaujean also owns. Guido Beaujean: “We had a similar car in the 1950s and when we had the opportunity to buy a Titan a few years ago, we did so as a beautiful and sad reference to the past. By ordering our first electric truck, we are taking an important step into the future.
