Mazda presents the CX-80: an SUV with seven seats… or a surprising amount of luxury

About two years ago, Mazda came out with an interesting goal: it had set its sights on the first image. By this it did not so much mean the same position as, say, BMW or Mercedes, but mainly it wanted to be an alternative to, say, Lexus – but possibly on a slightly larger scale. The new CX-60 has already taken a step in the right direction because it had a high-quality finish and powerful training. However, there was one thing that was still missing from Mazda: a real luxury sedan.

Flag with captain’s chairs

That should change soon, because in a short video Mazda prepares us for the arrival of the new SUV. The CX-80 will, as the name suggests, be the big brother of the CX-60 and the pictures seem to confirm this. For example, the video focuses on the rear of the Mazda where we see a third side window that appears to be taller than the SUV we already know. In the attached text, Mazda says that the CX-80 will be around five meters long, will have a wheelbase of around 3 meters and will be available with three rows of seats, good for up to seven seats.

However, that is not the only thing that the Japanese are revealing, because in addition to the seven-seater version, there will also be a variant of the new CX-80 that has six seats. Why choose that? Well, because the seats in the second row are real captain’s chairs with a separate cone in the middle. So it almost sounds like Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series material or – yes – an alternative to something like a Lexus LS. So Mazda is talking about the CX-80 as its new flagship, and the fleet will be launched for the first time on April 18.
