Luxury cars from South Korea are called Genesis. The Genesis G70 and Genesis G80 represent attractive alternatives for Mercedes & Co. The comparison reveals which car offers the most value for money.

The Korean luxury brand Genesis was launched in Europe in May 2021. With their unique design, luxury equipment and exceptional maintenance service, cars from far Asia quickly caused a sensation. The first model on the German market was the luxury class Genesis G80. Six months later, the Genesis G70 mid-size sedan followed, which challenges this comparison. Each of these two four-door models has its own special charms. For the G80, which is almost five meters long, it is at first a generous space that makes an impression. Front and back, the limousine also gives tall people plenty of room for free development.

This is not fully supported for Genesis G70. Things are difficult for people with long legs, especially those in the back. However, due to its more compact dimensions, the smaller of the two four-door models is more suitable for handling everyday urban life. Long journeys, on the other hand, are clearly the core capabilities of the Genesis G80. Its suspension, supported by dampers, proves to be very easy to swallow during slow and fast driving. In addition, driving noise permeates the spacious interior much more quietly than in the G70. The 4.69 m long rear-wheel drive car is more fun on winding roads. Genesis G70 and Genesis G80 in comparison

But what else do you get for your money? The base Genesis G70 costs 46,880 euros. Considering the high-quality equipment, which includes artificial leather upholstery, front seat heating, autonomous driving functions and a multimedia module including online navigation, this is a fair version – thanks to increased prices of competitors from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. But the Genesis G80, which is more expensive than 7,000 euros, can also claim to have the best price-performance ratio. It’s also cheaper than the premium German competition and in return offers many details that rivals charge extra for – such as the aforementioned electronic chassis control, electric seats and a whole range of assistance systems.

Although all the Korean Nobels have different engines in this comparison, they get the same (excessively high) test consumption, so that the fuel costs are on the same level. Due to the larger displacement and slightly higher WLTP fuel consumption, the annual tax costs of the Genesis G80 are 37 euros higher than those of the Genesis G70. And the luxury sedan also costs more money in terms of insurance because of the not very reasonable insurance rate: 574 euros for 10,000 km and 767 euros for 20,000 km of annual mileage. However, workshop costs cannot be listed for both models because maintenance for the first five years is included in the purchase price.

Our conclusion

Yes, the G80 is more expensive. However, a luxury class sedan is the best car when all its features are taken together. It offers more space and better driving characteristics. Operating costs are not very high. The price, which is 7,000 euros lower, speaks for the G70 because it is more functional and has more compact external dimensions.
