BMW and Toyota collaborate on fuel cell vehicles

BMW and Toyota have entered into a partnership for the production of electric vehicles with fuel cells. Manufacturers expect profits in the SUV market in particular, and BMW can benefit from Toyota’s experience with the series production of such vehicles. Read more about this below.

BMW had already introduced the BMW 750hL in the E38 model series in 2000, which could run on hydrogen and regular gasoline. However, due to the lack of fueling stations and demand, the concept was rejected or not pursued further for a long time. That seems to be changing now that BMW has entered into another partnership with Toyota with the Supra Z4 partnership, which aims to produce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The two manufacturers want to sell compatible cars as early as 2025.

Although the technical details have not yet been announced, BMW is already clear that the technology is very important for the large SUV. The current example of this is the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which BMW has already tested in the Arctic Circle. However, it currently only reaches an output of 125 kW, which is 45 kW less than the more powerful diesel engine. Important information such as the vehicle range is still missing. However, it should be built in small series this year.

Toyota, on the other hand, has a better starting point and is already mass-producing hydrogen cars like the Mirai. Now in its second generation, the sedan is also sold in Germany at a starting price of 63,900 euros and has an output of 134 kW. However, in order not to exceed the system too hard, Mirai is limited to 174 km / h. The tank volume in the three separate tanks together is 144 liters or 5.6 kg and on a single tank charge, which feeds the lithium-ion battery with 84 cells through the fuel cell, the Mirai can cover a distance of at least 650 km according to the manufacturer.
