For the first time, BMW has used data to measure energy consumption during the manufacture of an entire component. Using the iX’s standard kidney grille as an example, the automaker said it used CO2-Actual data from production forms the entire chain of data – from the extraction of raw materials, in the supply chain and during production at the production site.

This “Product Carbon Footprint” includes all emissions that occur during the production of the product, including from partners and suppliers. In the future, all data should be included in the calculation until the end of the life cycle. In the long run, this should enable the circular economy of the industry.

BMW measured emissions using the Catena-X certified CO22-Software provided by Siemens. The software enables data exchange based on the Catena-X calculation logic and connects the Landshut plant to the Covestro service provider. The company provides plastic for the part.

What is Catena-X?

Catena-X is a data ecosystem. It introduces a common “language” for companies in the automotive value chain. This facilitates the exchange of data, for example, to perform early warning analyzes based on their quality assurance. .

According to the company, BMW is currently exchanging data on the particle sensor and steering gear with Bosch, among other things. Samples and defects can be identified up to four months in advance, “often before defects occur,” the manufacturer comments.
