Maserati has recreated the sound of its famous V8 for its electric cars

The subject of the audio experience of electric vehicles is a real challenge for sports brands to face. Maserati aims to win over drivers with an innovative sound designed specifically for its electric models.

Recently, Maserati presented its latest creation in the field of electric cars: the the new GranCabrio Folgore. This electric car has a triple engine configuration that gives the super convertible a top speed of 290 km/h. What makes this car unique is the personal voice it recreates, according to Maserati, “a unique relationship between the driver and the car“.

Davide Danesin, Maserati’s head of engineering, emphasizes the importance of providing a consistent and engaging driving experience. To achieve this, the company has devoted a lot of effort in developing the right audio experience. Maserati’s engineers carefully analyzed the electricity flowing through the converter in the electric models, changing the sound signature of its historic V8 engine, now retired, to unique new soundwhich will be used on all its electric models.

This is called “Folgore sound”. This technique aims to ensure a more pleasant and different sound experience, especially considering that the high frequency noise of electric motors can be harmful to the human ear. This unique type of sound is reproduced through a high-quality speaker system, developed in collaboration with the famous Italian hi-fi audio brand, Sonus Faber. Every detail of the sound has been carefully coordinated, ensuring a deep listening experience for passengers on board and outside the car.

Despite all these good intentions, 2023 marked an important phase for Maserati, and production at Mirafiori has been reduced to less than ten cars a day due to low demand. Employees are currently on layoff, and the future remains uncertain due to the end of production of the Levante SUV which currently has no replacement. The situation could lead to more social safety nets and reduced working hours for employees.
