Alonso’s fox approach ensures satisfaction at Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso also emphasized his experienced defensive skills in the GP Japan battle and secured important championship points for Aston Martin.

The Spaniard battled hard for sixth place against McLaren driver Oscar Piastri in the final stages to collect another eight points for the British racing team.

Above all, Alonso took advantage of his experience and frustrated the Australian with a defensive trick.

The DRS maneuver prevents a three-way battle

The Spaniard tried to save his ERS battery in the final stage and prevented a connection with Mercedes driver George Russell (GBR). Initially, Alonso failed to close the gap to Piastri. However, the Spaniard helped the Australian in the DRS zones – and at the same time helped himself.

Therefore, without the help of DRS, Russell could not close the gap between Alonso and Piastri. The Mercedes driver overtook Piastri in the closing stages, but Alonso crossed the finish line in sixth ahead of the Brit.

“Obviously I had Piastri behind me to defend against Russell,” the Spaniard also said after the race.
