General Motors’ Buick brand has updated its pure electric SUV Electra E4 in China, lowering the starting price by RMB 30,000 yuan ($4,180), making it the latest brand to join the price war.

The updated Electra E4 now starts at RMB 159,900, down 15.8 percent from the previous RMB 189,900, according to a statement released today by GM’s joint venture in China, SAIC-GM.

The Buick Electra E4 went on sale in China in June 2023, when it was released in four versions with prices starting at RMB 189,900, RMB 209,900, RMB 219,900 and RMB 259,900 respectively.

In the latest update, the model continues to be offered with four options, but the starting prices have been reduced to RMB 159,900, RMB 182,900, RMB 192,900, and RMB 229,900 respectively.

This means that the starting prices of the four versions of the Electra E4 have been reduced by RMB 30,000, RMB 27,000, RMB 27,000 and RMB 30,000 respectively.

The Buick Electra E4 is an all-electric SUV with a length, width and height of 4,818 mm, 1,912 mm and 1,581 mm respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,954 mm.

Prior to the launch of the Electra E4 in China, Buick unveiled the Electra E5 on April 13, 2023, its first model based on GM’s Ultium platform.

Buick is the latest to join the new car price war in China.

BYD launched the Qin Plus Glory Edition along with the Chaser 05 Glory Edition on February 19, both with prices starting as low as RMB 79,800, in an attempt to take market share away from gasoline cars by undercutting the price of comparable gasoline cars.

Later, brands including SAIC-GM-Wuling, Neta Auto, and Changan Deepal then followed BYD’s move.
