BYD Fang Cheng Bao Super 9 (2024): the best sports car from China

Chinese group BYD has introduced a two-seater electric speedster. It produces an extraordinary 1100 hp. However, passengers should be tough.

BYD? That’s right – this is the manufacturer that managed to steal the reigns in China from VW a year ago. Within a very short time, “Build Your Dreams”, as the English translation of the acronym, also filled its German portfolio, especially with six fully electric models (here you can read our first tests of the Seal sedan and Seal U. SUV). However, a small discount from China is not among them. And the Super 9 that has now been presented – although it is not yet clear if it will come to us at some point – is the exact opposite of small and cheap.

Specializing in SUVs and luxury

Strictly speaking, it comes from the range of Fang Cheng Bao, one of BYD’s sub-brands, of which there are several, including Denza (in which Mercedes still has a small share) or Yangwang (you can read more about the desert-ready Yangwang U8 here). Fang Cheng Bao deals with luxury and premium products, actually cast in the body shape of SUVs, one already exists (Bao 5 or Leopard 5), two more (Bao 3 and Bao 8) were recently announced.

The announcement was accompanied by a completely different genre: the Super 9 is an exciting high-performance sports car, flat-bottomed, with impressive sliding doors. The outfit comes from the experienced pen of BYD chief designer Wolfgang Eggert, whose CV includes senior positions at such well-known addresses as Alfa Romeo, Seat, Audi and Lamborghini.

Carbon was the material of choice for the monocoque and body, as well as for the red leather seat shells. There is only room for two people in the cockpit, and because the windshield – the windshield would say a lot – is very small, you are dealing with a speedster. There is no ceiling at all, so passengers are likely to travel in stormy conditions.

The driver’s hands hold the yoke steering element. The manufacturer has not yet said how much horsepower it will produce. It will be clear, however, that the Super 9 – whose production name will probably be Bao 9 – will be driven by a fully electric car, four engines, 1100 hp of the U9, which is also a hypercar, and will accelerate from. 0 to 100 km/h in two seconds and operates under sister brand Yangwang.

Travel separately: There is a wide middle bridge between the two passengers.

For now, the Super 9 Concept is still a preview of a future production model. The electric speedster will have its first big step at the “Auto China” trade show, which will be held in Beijing from April 25 to May 5.
