Scott Dixon takes IndyCar win at 49th Grand Prix of Long Beach – NBC Los Angeles

The most improbable result of the day — Scott Dixon, driver of Chip Ganassi Racing (9), surprised by taking his second title at the 49th Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday.

Dixon finished the race with plenty of fuel to go, awarding him the top spot on the podium in Southern California.

No one in NTT INDYCAR SERIES more fuel efficient than Dixon, and he ran the last 34 laps of the 85-lap road race on one tank.

Strategy won this race.

“It was a tough and very competitive race and a fantastic race for Dixon,” said Spanish race driver Alex Palou.

Even Dixon was surprised by his victory.

“That was hard; that was really hard,” he said. “Honestly, I didn’t think we were going to make it, and they kept giving me the (fuel) number, and it wasn’t available… I was close but it wasn’t enough. Fortunately, we were on the safe side there.”

It was the 57th victory for Dixon, who has won four of the last six IndyCar races. The first time Dixon won in Long Beach was in 2015.

The early laps of the race were dominated by Will Power as he grabbed an early lead over the rest of the drivers and had a five second gap on the field after ten laps.

Street course

According to many drivers, the Long Beach track is one of the toughest street courses on the circuit.

Known for its sharp curves, the track is very rough to navigate, resulting in many close calls, slow traffic due to rookie drivers and, surprisingly, no major accidents.

Race results

Dixon finished first with 53 points, followed by runner-up Colton Herta, who scored 41. Third place went to Palou, who scored 35 points. The top five were completed by Josef Newgarden and Marcus Ericsson.
