Electric car manufacturer Polestar is reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 9% per vehicle

Swedish-Chinese electric car manufacturer Polestar has published its 2023 sustainability report. The startup explains that they continue to make significant progress towards their climate goals.

Polestar achieved a 9 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle sold in 2023. This corresponds to a reduction of 3.4 tCO2e compared to the previous year and was achieved by focusing on three main areas: the use of selected materials with a low climate impact, supply of energy from renewable energy for the production of vehicles and batteries and improve energy efficiency in the consumption phase.

The achievements achieved in 2023 and future prospects show that it is possible to reduce the growth from production, explains Polestar. Fredrika KlarĂ©n, Head of Sustainability at the company: “Our vision is clear: we want to accelerate the transition to electricity and at the same time use sustainable and innovative solutions to make electric vehicles even more climate-friendly. We must admit that our industry still has a good chance of improvement when it comes to disclosing concrete plans to achieve climate commitments. This year we continue to share detailed information about the processes to make our goals more concrete and deliver our 2040 plans.

In 2023, the focus was also on improving monitoring methods: “One goal was to expand the number of hazardous metals found in batteries. An important achievement is the monitoring of lithium and nickel used in Polestar 3 batteries, as well as cobalt and mica, which have been monitored due to blockchain technology since 2020 and 2021, respectively.

In addition to the Polestar 2 mid-size car and, in the future, the Polestar 3 and 4 SUVs, the brand also wants to introduce the Polestar 5 sports sedan and the Polestar 6 sports car by 2026.
