How does this car compare to its competitors?

Our car tester Rutger drives the Volkswagen ID.7, the German brand’s new electric car, for four weeks. Today: Who exactly is ID.7 competing against?

When shopping for a gas car, there are often clearly recognizable competitors. From brands with similar appeal, in a comparable price range and of similar type and design. When it comes to electric vehicles, if you are looking for an SUV you will often find direct competitors, but there are very few options for hatchbacks, sedans and station wagons. So what cars does the Volkswagen ID.7 compete with in our endurance test?

I’m going to assume you want a lot of space in the back seat if you buy an ID.7. That is one of its most important USPs. It also immediately means that the BMW i4 and Nio ET5 are eliminated because they are too small. The Mercedes-Benz EQE is impressive. In fact, the EQS could be a better candidate, but with a starting price of 112,000 euros it is more expensive. In fact, you can almost buy two ID.7s for one EQS.

You can consider Xpeng P7. And that leaves us with Hyundai’s Ioniq 6. Tesla Model 3 is very small, Model S is very expensive at 96,000 euros.

Let’s take a look at Volkswagen’s most important figures:
Volkswagen ID.7
Price €57,990
WLTP mileage 621 km
Wheel base 297 cm
Luggage space 532 liters

If we compare that to EQE, a few things stand out:
Mercedes-Benz EQE
Price €69,928
WLTP mileage 621 km
Wheel 312 cm
Luggage space 430 liters

The driving range is exactly the same, the car is only one centimeter shorter than the ID.7, but it has a longer wheelbase. You sit royally in the back of the Mercedes. But the cargo area is very small. The EQE is also a sedan rather than a hatchback.

And anyone who thinks in terms of price that they can drive a Mercedes for 12K more: it is clearly compared to a Volkswagen. If you want the same equipment, you are most likely talking about a difference of €20K.

Xpeng P7
Price €51,188
WLTP mileage 576 km
Wheel base 299 cm
Luggage space 440 liters

The Xpeng P7 has a short driving range and limited cargo space, but it’s a royal car to drive with plenty of room for adult rear passengers. For €7000 less you have a car with lots of options, which feels more luxurious inside than a VW, but whose resale value will probably be lower.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Long Series
Price €50,895
WLTP mileage 614 km
Wheel 295 cm
Luggage space 446 liters

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 in the Long Range version is cheaper at 7000 euros and has an almost identical driving range and luggage space that comes close to the ID.7 of all competitors, although there are still 86 liters in between and this is a sedan instead his. of the hatchback. It also feels roomy in the back and the interior is a bit European, but it feels much smarter.

With this comparison it quickly becomes clear that the ID.7 almost has its own niche. Competitors are tougher or more expensive. Next week we will draw conclusions about ID.7 and say goodbye.
