Champion Max Verstappen: Stay sharp, learn new things / Formula 1

Why is two-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen regularly in a racing simulator outside of his work at Red Bull Racing? The 35-time Grand Prix winner explains.

The 2023 Formula 1 season kicks off with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 5. Most Formula 1 fans don’t realize this, but a Grand Prix driver spends more time in meetings than in his car on weekends.

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen explained: “The most important meeting is the team meeting in the morning. That can take ninety minutes. If everything goes well, this meeting will end in half an hour. We basically go through the day. Then, of course, there are shows to sponsors. We have a lot to do.”

“Also, the drivers meet the race control in the evening after the first two periods of free practice. Sometimes we go into events from the last Grand Prix. Or we talk about road safety issues. Here, too, the range is great. I’m sitting on meetings that end in ten minutes. If a discussion occurs, it can turn into an hour and a half. Then we also meet with Pirelli or as part of the GPDA drivers’ association.

Time in a racing car is limited, so preparation in the online world is paramount. Fans keep asking: How close is practicing in the simulator to real driving?

Max says: «I think our simulator is one of the best in the industry. We feed the data from the car that we collected on the race track. Of course, the convergence between simulation and reality is not perfect.”

Amazing: Verstappen spends almost one month of his racing year in the simulator! “The days are very long, but I’m sure that this job is worth it. I also don’t want the test driver to take care of the narrative like other racing teams do. I want to do it myself, because everyone has their own driving style.

But that goes further – because Verstappen also regularly sits in the home race simulator in Monaco. “It helps me stay focused. There’s not much else you can do right now if you have to stay at home. And I’m really enjoying the sim game.”

Ironic: When Verstappen competes in simulation as an individual, it’s usually not a virtual Formula 1 race. Max explains this by saying that this forces him to adjust his driving style – we’re talking about steering, braking. , acceleration, lines. Verstappen wants to be able to adapt to the new situation as quickly as possible. And from this, according to the Dutchman, he continues to learn new things to use in Formula 1 cars.
