World champion Max Verstappen: “Chaos all the time” / Formula 1

There is some irony in this: Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, a self-confessed athlete, is the most successful Grand Prix driver in this category.

Max Verstappen made his Formula 1 debut in Qatar on October 7, 2023: He became the first Formula 1 world champion to secure his title for Saturday’s race. Third place behind McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris was enough for the Dutchman to win his third title.

Almost half a year later, Formula 1 competes for a controversial thirteenth time at the Shanghai International Circuit in China.

Max Verstappen has not changed his opinion on this: “I just find the normal process as a driver more exciting. Because I can get more from the car in qualifying on Saturday if I was able to improve the setup in the three training sessions before.

“As a racing driver, I find it unsatisfactory to enter the playoffs after only one practice session. In addition, fans usually know after a race what to expect at a Grand Prix. Because trends can be recognized even in the short term. For me, it reduces tension and excitement.”

“In a normal process, most fans don’t know how fast the different drivers were. You see the results in the final practice, but then the driver can show up in the World Championship race or fail. In a sprint race you have none of that.”

The irony of it all: Red Bull Racing star Verstappen is the most successful sprinter – he has won half of all race positions and won eight out of twelve races.

Max says: “During the race weekend, we get more chaos and question marks. By the way, that’s good for Formula 1. But for me, too, this is an unknown stage. We’ve never raced wing cars here before, for so I don’t understand how well we’ll do, but I’m not worried about that.”

“So far, Ferrari has been close to us in many races. We will have to sacrifice here too to win again. The field is definitely united.”
